Byron Man Caught Stealing Mail Avoids Prison
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Byron man will spend 5 years on probation for stealing mail, fleeing police and a felony drug conviction.
21-year-old Evan Prendez earlier pleaded guilty to the drug count, along with one count of mail theft and fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle. He was arrested last November after an Olmsted County deputy responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle in Byron and came upon Prendez, who responded by backing his vehicle in the direction of the law officer, forcing the deputy to jump out of harm’s way.
Prendez sped-off, but the deputy was able to get his license plate number and also recognized the young man, who was later located and arrested. That’s when it was discovered that Prendez had what a Sheriff’s Department spokesman termed “a significant amount of stolen mail” in his vehicle.
The drug charge stemmed from an incident that occurred in May of last year.
Prendez was also given a 60-day jail sentence, but because he was given credit for the time he’s already spent in jail, he will not have to serve any additional time.
