Byron Girls and Boys Basketball Sweeps Cannon Falls
The Cannon Falls Bomber girls basketball team can be proud of their 50-27 loss to Byron on Tuesday night.
I say that because no team thus far this young season had held 6-foot-5 sophomore Byron post Ayoka Lee and her team to 50 points.
Lee got in some foul trouble and sat much of the first half and did not play a lot of minutes in the second half. She scored eight points in each half to lead her team in scoring.
Lee also altered many shots and blocked a number as well against the Bombers.
Cannon Falls has no person on their team over 5-foot-8.
The score at the half was Byron 26 and Cannon Falls 13.
The Bears are now 4-0 and the Bombers fell to 1-2.
In addition to Lee, 5-foot-9 senior Emma Nelson had 10 points, all in the first half, and 5-foot-11 senior Lexi Barth added eight points, with six coming in the second half.
The Bears were 9 of 11 from the free throw line and Cannon Falls was 4 of 9.
The Bombers were led by 5-foot-6 senior Hailey Huseth with eight points and 5-foot-8 senior Grace Rutter tallied seven.
Cannon Falls was plagued by a couple of long droughts offensively. They started at the beginning of each half.
The Bombers did not score until the 11:12 mark of the first half and the 8:48 mark of the second half.
Cannon Falls hosts Lake City next Tuesday while Byron is at Rochester Lourdes on Friday.
In the boys game, the Bears led 32-27 at the half and beat Cannon Falls 71-63.
Cannon Falls collected eight three-point baskets, seven by Tanner Carlson, in the defeat. Carlson finished with 28 points and Ryan Dirckx added 10.
For Byron, Bjorn Knutson led a balanced scoring attack with 19, Michael Coble and Caden Blazing had 16 each and Andrew Sorenson added 12.
The Bombers were 9 of 13 and the Bears 11 of 18 from the free throw line.
