Byron and Cannon Falls in Subsection Final

The Byron Bears defeated the Rochester Lourdes Eagles for the third time this season 66-57 Monday night while Cannon Falls edged Hayfield in a overtime thriller not without some controversy.  The Bears are now 21-8 and as usual rode their defense to victory.  Rochester Lourdes tallied 19 turnovers on the night and trailed Byron 34-22 at the half.  Byron Senior Buster Meyer led the way with 16 points.  Byron was 26 of 36 from the free throw line while Lourdes was 13 of 16.  In the nightcap the halftime score was tied at 28 and it was tied at 48 at the end of regulation.  With 5 seconds to go in the overtime Austin Noble stole a pass and threw it downcourt to Hunter Johnson who was fouled by Drew Streighthiff.  An intentional foul was called.  After a delay to sort out the situation, Johnson hit both free throws.  Neither team had played in the Civic Center before.  Remember they both came from Section two to Section one this season.  it showed in the long range game with the Vikings 4 of 15 and the Bombers 2 of 11 from three point range.   Alex Bultena led Cannon Falls with 17 points, Johnson had 15 and Jordan Lundell 11.  For Hayfield Cole Krueger capped off a stellar career with 14 points, Jeremy Stuart had 11 and Drew Streightiff  10.  The Bears and Bombers collide Saturday night at 8 for the Subsection championship on KDHL.  Coverage begins at 7:45pm.
