This is a budding lilac bush outside of the KDHL studios. This is my first sign of spring. It is amazing how perennial plants can survive 30 below zero temperatures in the winter and begin growing again in the spring. Hopefully by the time this lilac bush is in full bloom I will have my corn planted!

Driving around our listening area, you can tell farmers are anxious to begin spring fieldwork. Going out to the farm last Tuesday, I met a truck pulling an anhydrous ammonia tank. I also noticed a lot of tractors, planters, field cultivators and sprayers that were pulled out of the shed. Farmers are doing maintenance and checking equipment so it is ready when the "bell sounds."

It is hard to describe the feeling as a farmer when spring arrives. The anticipation of another growing season, the smell of tilled soil along with the excitement of the start of what hopefully will be a good year. It sure was a struggle the last two years getting the crop planted because it was so wet. Maybe we are due for good weather this spring and a nice, relaxing planting season!
