Snow days. They are a kid's dream and a parent's nightmare. How can you fill all the hours of the day without stuffing your children head first into the nearest snow bank?

A quick Google search of "snow day activities" pulled up about 18.8 million results. Reading all those pages of ideas could easily fill your snow day, but wouldn't you rather be having fun than reading about having fun?

I also wondered which months in Minnesota tend to bring us the most snow, and Mike Griesinger with the National Weather Service office in Chanhassen was happy to share some snow facts.

While our biggest snow storms, those sometimes dropping double-digit amounts of snow in one shot, tend to fall at the beginning and end of winter (November/December and March), Griesinger said December and January tend to be our overall snowiest months. But, because of lower temperatures, January storms tend to drop smaller amounts of snow. And, here's some news to look forward to: February tends to be a bit of a winter lull for snowfall.

While this post may come too late to be useful for our most recent storm, there's plenty of winter remaining to put it to good use. So check out our ideas below. You can share your snow day activities with us, too. We might use them the next time we're buried indoors by snow and wind.

  • Read a book

One of my favorite things about winter is that the cold and snow make a perfect excuse to get cozy with a good book.

I know, screen time is bad for kids. But everyone likes movies, and what's a snow day for if not ignoring some of the rules?

  • Cook or bake

My kids love to help in the kitchen. This one may require more adult supervision than some of the other activities, but you'll end up with some tasty treats for everyone to enjoy.

  • Get outside

If the cold and wind aren't too rough, bundle up and play in all that fresh snow. Having the day off makes it the perfect opportunity to build a snow fort or your neighborhood's friendliest snowman!
