A six-year-old girl went through the ice of a pond on Tuesday evening. She had been walking through a park and she agreed to meet her father across the pond. She followed some footprints on to the ice and went in.

An Austin firefighter put on a floatation suit, crawled out onto the ice and was able to pull her from the pond. The child was taken to Mayo Clinic Austin for treatment of hypothermia and then was released.

A reminder from officials that ice is never totally safe. And now with the warm weather we have been adding, a lot of ice in this part of the state, will become dangerous quickly. This story had a happy ending. Many ice accidents do not.

If you are planning on venturing out on to a lake, check with others you know that use the lake or check with a bait shop owner near the lake to ask about ice conditions.
