The Nitrogen Smart Program is back for it's fourth year. Nitrogen smart is a training program for farmers that presents the basics for maximizing the economic return on nitrogen investments while minimizing nitrogen losses to the environment. The Nitrogen Smart program delivers high quality, research based education so producers can learn the basics of nitrogen management.

They include: sources of nitrogen, how nitrogen is lost from the soil and how you can reduce losses, how to manage nitrogen in drainage systems, what the Nutrient Reduction Strategy and Nitrogen Fertilizer Management Plan mean for Minnesota farmers, Practices to refine nitrogen management, including split applications, alternative nitrogen fertilizers, soil and tissue testing and nitrogen models.

Nitrogen Smart certification is valid for three years after farmers complete the course. The Advanced Nitrogen Smart session focuses on manure management. The Nitrogen Smart Program is funded by the Minnesota Corn Growers, hosted by the Minnesota Agriculture Water Resources Center and presented by the University of Minnesota Extension Service.

Pre-registration is not required and the program is free to anyone that feels they could benefit from it. Nitrogen Smart is also available on line. For more information and a listing of all the times and locations go to the University of Minnesota Extension web site:https://extension.umn.edu.
