George Rhem, the Discover Farms Coordinator for the Minnesota Agriculture Resource Center, gave me a call the other day and asked me if I would help get the word to farmers about a new blog on water quality. If you go to agwaterexchange.com, you can sign up for the blogs. Rhem said there was no set schedule on when you would get an email or blog. When a summary of data from the Discovery Farms was ready or a hot topic is in the farm news you will receive a blog. All you have to do is sign up, there is no cost!

Water quality and nitrate nitrogen seem to be in the news a lot these days. The better-informed farmers are on the issue with science-based data the better. In addition, the more we know about nitrogen and how to manage it the more profitable we will be. Remember, nitrogen is a macronutrient needed for corn production. Corn cannot make its own nitrogen as can a legume crop like soybeans. That means we pay for nitrogen and we want it in the soil for the corn. It doesn't do us any good if it is in the Mississippi River on its way to the Gulf of Mexico.
