It is difficult to describe the feeling of relief when you have finished with harvesting and tillage. The next step is cleaning out the dryer and getting machinery cleaned up and put away. It is also nice to go home late in the day and just be with your family. There were a lot of days it felt like you were going 100 mph trying to make every minute productive. As temperatures fall, don't forget to aerate and regularly check your corn in storage!

If the temperature of your corn is much higher then outside temperatures, you can get moisture migration. This will occur even if the corn was dry enough for storage when you put it in the bin. So, as the temperature drops it is critical to aerate the corn to cool it down for winter storage. Another benefit if cooling corn to below 30 degrees is you do not have to be concerned about insects. Temperatures below 30 will kill any insects that might be in your bin.

Finally, when the corn is cooled down, check it on a regular basis. If it does begin to go out of condition, you can catch it early before there is a lot of damage. The only thing worse than low corn prices is low prices with dockage at the elevator because of damage!
